Dr. Alaa Meshref is a Professor of Urology in the Faculty of Medicine, Cairo University (Egypt). Urology or urosurgery is a branch of surgery specializing in genito-urinary diseases, mainly the kidneys, ureters, bladder, prostate, urethra and testicles.

Dr. Meshref is especially interested in diseases of the prostate. He is an expert in transrectal ultrasonography, in which an ultrasound probe is inserted through the anal opening to view the prostate on an ultrasound machine. Biopsies (samples) may be taken from the prostate very accurately under transrectal ultrasound guidance. Besides his medical interests, Dr. Meshref was ex-champion of Egypt in Table Tennis (ping-pong). He is currently the manager of El-Ahly club in Table Tennis, which is the number one club in Egypt and Arab countries in the game for the last couple of years.
